Overview

Saath Nibhana Saathiya is based on the saas-bahu (Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law) relationship retold through a young and naive girl, Gopi’s point of view. It is the story of Gopi and Rashi who are cousins.
Saathiya begins with Kokila Modi's search for the perfect bahu for her son, Ahem. She wants a naive girl for her son and finds that Gopi would make a perfect daughter-in-law for her and a dutiful wife for Ahem.kiran ghangale

Although she is illiterate, Gopi is a kind, generous and loyal girl who will make any effort for her family and her husband's success and happiness. Gopi, who is married to Ahem Modi, is often taken advantage of, due to her naive attitude.

Rashi is the very opposite of Gopi. She is beautiful and modern but is also outspoken and driven by social standing and materialistic wealth. She dreams of marrying into a rich family and living a luxurious life. She is strong willed and believes that her dreams will come true. She is now married to Jigar Modi. Rashi and her mother will go out of their ways to destroy Gopi's relationship with Ahem.

Saath Nibhana Saathiya has taken a very old concept of Indian

society and tries to introduce it in a new modern context.

Gopi Modi

Gopi is a pretty, naive, docile and innocent girl in her early 20s who was raised by her loving uncle and tyrannical, abusive aunt after she lost her parents at an early age. Gopi never found the true love of a mother and craves this same love from her mother-in-law, Kokila Modi. She will go to any effort for her family and never begrudges doing household chores. Her only dream is to have a loving husband and in-laws. Her former life that was ruled by her evil-minded aunt Urmila and street-smart cousin Rashi, left her naive, uneducated and easily exploited. Gopi has no ambitions other than gaining the love of all, particularly her husband, Ahem Modi. With her mother-in-law's help, Gopi started to become more appealing to Ahem, though he is hesitant to show it. Gopi finally became educated with the help of Ahem which also helped their relationship. Love has also started to blossom between these two.

Rashi Modi

Rashi is Gopi's cousin and is most likely in her early 20s and elder to Gopi by a few months. She hates Gopi's stature in the household and always tries to make her life miserable. She is obsessed with material posessions and social status so she is usually scheming with her mother Urmila to get her hands on the enviable wealth and treasures of Modi Bhavan. In fact, her sole purpose for marrying Jigar was to gain access to the sumptuous treasures of the rich Modi's. She shows little interest in Jigar otherwise. Rashi is a beautiful, modern girl who's full of herself and loves life. She has a very close relationship with her mother Urmila. Ancient traditions and rituals don't mean a lot to Rashi and she lacks respect towards elders.. Later, the Modi family got wind of how she cheated and got married to Jigar and was therefor said to go and never come back to Modi house, however she may come back with help of her mother.

Ahem Modi

A handsome and imposing man of today who is around 27 years of age. He is the son of Kokila and Parag Modi. He is an egomaniac who takes business matters very seriously and believes in himself totally. He can be insensitive at times and is almost always hesitant to express himself, struggling to show any emotion at all. He loves, and is devoted to his mother Kokila, blindly following whatever she says to him. Ahem is the one handling the entire Modi business empire, in which he is very skilled. Ahem was in love with a woman called Anita before his marriage to Gopi thus he even refused to acknowledge her as his wife. He particularly resented the fact that Gopi was illiterate and considered her unworthy of him. After Gopi was accused of cheating in her school exam, Ahem personally decided to educate her. This brought them slightly closer together. Ahem has grown fonder of Gopi but he doesn't like to show his feelings on this matter.

Jigar Modi

He is a sweet, soft hearted and handsome boy of around 25 years of age. He is the son of Hetal and Chirag Modi. He is very fond of his mother and loves his wife Rashi dearly, despite receiving no warm response from her. Jigar was originally to be married to Sonal, the daughter of a family who were close friends of the Modi family. Rashi's mother, Urmila, schemed so that Jigar ended up marrying Rashi instead. He is a friendly, laid back young man who loves to take life as it comes. He is not as strict or serious minded about things as Ahem. He is also part of the Modi business empire and helps with the running of things though he does not have much interest in it. This in turn irritates Rashi. He always seems to put a smile on Gopi's face when troubles arise and is very kind to her. He is a sweet talker and is sensitive to others' feelings. He wishes things to work out between Gopi and Ahem.
He finds out what Rashi and her mother has done during the marriage, from Sonal. He questions and accuses Rashi for being a selfish woman who does not care for anyone's feelings and is an all time liar, He wishes to tell the family about Rashi, however his love for his family stops him from revealing the truth to them.

Kokila Modi

A strong headed woman of around 50 years of age who is very strict and wants things to be under her control. She expects things to go the way she wants them to and is very determined. She loves her daughter-in-law Gopi with all her heart and is determined to unite Gopi and Ahem into a loving relationship. She is married to Parakh Modi but is not happy with him as he doesn't earn and holds no social respect. She wants her son to be a successful person unlike his father and has brought Ahem up to succeed in everything he does. After her mother's visit to Modi Bhavan, Kokila redoubled her efforts to unite Gopi and Ahem with some success.she understands every plans of Rashi(Rucha)and urmilla bhen shah.

Parag Modi

A man of about 53 years of age who loves classical music and bhajans. He is creative and has struggled to find his niche in life. He is exactly the opposite of his elder brother Chirag as he does not have a job and earns nothing. This upsets his wife Kokila as she feels he holds no dignity for himself. Parakh is somewhat scared of his wife, and so keeps his mouth shut most of the time. He loves his children, Ahem and Kinjal, and always tries to do his best by them. He is a good family man. He believes in social work and is completely opposite to his wife Kokila.

Hetal Modi

Hetal is Jigar's mother and Chirag's wife. She is a kind, soft-hearted woman of around 47 years of age and is very homely. She is a motherly figure and loves Gopi dearly. She is also very docile, the complete opposite of Kokila and is more like Gopi in her nature. Even though Hetal is the jethani of the Modi household, it always appears that she is the devrani and Kokila the jethani. Hetal has no problem with this and does her work very affectionately. She is very understanding but not capable of recognizing Rashi's plans. She is a woman who loves, adores and cares for everyone. She also loves Gopi like her own daughter.

Chirag Modi

A man of about 55 years of age, he believes in hard work and is a strong pillar of the Modi Empire. He is also a family man but gives more importance to work and wants his son Jigar to work hard and give importance to work too. Chirag is something of a mentor to Ahem in business and carries a great deal of respect. He is devoted to his wife Hetal and loves his family. He is elder to his brother Parakh.

Urmila Shah

Urmila is the primary antagonist. She frequently creates schemes with her daughter Rashi and loves going through other peoples private affairs. Her primary motive appears to be for wealth and social status. She too resents Gopi's position in the modi household and tries to tarnish her image. Urmila wishes to see Rashi become the favourite daughter of Modi Bhavan. She has a very nice husband, Jitu, but treats him badly as he doesn't earn as much as she would like. Initially, she treated Gopi like a maid and as an unnecessary mouth to feed in her poor household until Gopi's marriage to Ahem Modi. Rashi is undoubtedly the apple of her mother's eye and Urmila will go to any lengths to increase her daughters standing. She is a cunning character in the serial and plans and plots with Rashi all the time. Now she is the mother-in-law of kinjal and hopes to exploit her family's wealth for her own gain.

Jitu Shah

Gopi's uncle and Rashi's father, he is a very compassionate man of around 52 years of age. He loves Gopi like his own biological daughter and would buy treats for her occasionally. He is scared of his wife Urmila, who shows a dislike towards him the entire time. He is very caring and wants his children to stay happy.

Kinjal Shah

Kinjal is the sister of Ahem and cousin of Jigar. She is an attractive, modern girl and loves to have fun with her friends. She used to be self centred and rude to others but she has matured. She used to have a boyfriend called Umang, with whom she broke up with after Gopi and Rashi's marriage to her brothers. She was also engaged to marry a boy named Elesh Mehta who somewhat took interest in her. However, due to some scheming of Rashi and Urmila, they made Kinjal appear pregnant, which she wasn't and her engagement with Elesh was broken. After many complications, Kinjal is finally married to Dhawal who she does not like initially, despite his adoring nature. She hates having married beneath herself, into a low class family and she also hates her scheming aunt Urmila. Kinjal does the house work and helps Urmila a little bit. She is also interested in modelling and has worked as a sari model, much to the disgust of her mother.

Dhawal Shah

Dhawal is the loving husband of Kinjal, Kokila Modi's daughter. He is a very humble person and he loves his wife despite her lack of affection towards him. He always tries hard to make Kinjal happy and buys her gifts but he usually fails to impress her. Dhaval owns a shop of his own selling undergarments and hopes to expand his business very soon. His long term goals are to earn enough money to support his wife's needs and happiness and to be a good husband and family man. He also has a financial debt to pay back to the Modi family. He has a good attitude towards work and always thinks positively.

Revathi

She is the mother of Kokila and is very clever. She understands everyone and everything easily. She wants Gopi and Ahems relationship to improve and wants Kokila to bring them closer. She chose to give her idol of Lord Krishna to Rashi as her marriage to Jigar appeared to be more stable and loving than Gopi's marriage.
