SBS Bank is a building society
and registered bank in New Zealand
founded in 1869 as Southland Building Society. It is New Zealand's largest building society, and claims to be the only building society in the world to have become a recognised bank while maintaining its mutual status. Its head office is in Invercargill
. The bank has diversified into fund management and life assurance, and at 31 March 2010 had total assets of $NZ2.63 billion.
By 2001 the society's total assets exceeded NZ$1 billion, making it the largest building society in New Zealand. The society changed its trading name and was registered as a bank on 7 October 2008.
