Located in the northeast part of Winnipeg, River East has a school population of roughly 1,050, making it one of the largest schools in Manitoba. The school colours are blue and white and the school mascot is the Kodiak.

River East Collegiate music program is headed by Jeff Kula.

Concert Band

River East is home to two concert bands, both under the direction of Jeff Kula. Enrolment in one of the concert bands (Senior 2 Concert Band or Senior 3 & Senior 4 Concert Band) is considered a credited course, and rehearsals take place every second school day throughout the year. The course focusses both on repertoire for performance, musical theory, and practical ability on instruments. Both bands are extremely popular: the Senior 2 Concert Band, open only to Senior 2 students at REC, is made up of 75+ students, while the Senior 3 & Senior 4 Concert Band is made up of 135+ students. Both Concert Bands perform twice a year at each of the schools concerts, held at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall. Enrolment in either Concert Band at REC allows students to partake in the biannual REC Music Trip that takes place every even-numbered year, where River East students are given the opportunity to travel extensively throughout North America

Wind Ensemble

The River East Collegiate Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Jeff Kula is an ensemble for students who wish to play Concert Band-style music in a much smaller setting. Unlike either of the school's Concert Bands, Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group where only the most dedicated students are invited to play.
Wind Ensemble is worth 1 credit and rehearsals take place in the morning before school twice a week. Aside from performing at each of the school's annual concerts, the REC Wind Ensemble has performed in numerous music festivals and debuted and recorded many world premier pieces by such local composers as Sid Robinovich and Borisa Sabilic.

Percussion Ensemble

The River East Collegiate Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jeff Kula, rehearses once a week after school, and participation in the ensemble is strictly voluntary. The ensemble performs numerous times throughout the year, and annually does collaborative work with the Brandon University

Jazz Band

The River East Collegiate Jazz Band (under the direction of Jeff Kula) is an anomaly amongst high school jazz bands. The REC Jazz Band is a no-cut ensemble (except for rhythm section, which is one to a part. However, auxiliary percussion parts are available to those who audition for a rhythm section instrument and don't get the top spot), and the enrolment in the band (80+ students), makes it one of the largest jazz bands in the world. Jazz Orchestra

The River East Collegiate Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jeff Kula, meets for rehearsal four times a week after school. . The band has been invited to play at the festival five times since 2003 (2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2011). Furthermore, it is the only Canadian band to ever be invited to the festival.

School Clubs

There are many different clubs and activities available at River East including sport teams, yearbook,key club, UNESCO, photography, Habitat for Humanity, book club, girls in gaming, ISCF,Kodiak spirt circle,garden clubs,German language contest.

Sports

River East Collegiate has many teams at both the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. They have male and female teams in Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Golf, Hockey and Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field and a male-only Football team. They compete in the Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference (KPAC). The school football team won the first annual Peguis Bowl in 2007 when they defeated their rival Miles Macdonell Collegiate Buckeyes by a score of 28-0. The school has a tradition of athletic success and hundreds of KPAC championship banners hang in the gym (some dating back to the 1960s).

Varsity Football

River East had previously been in the first division (Potter Division) until 2009 when they moved down to the second division (Currie Division). They moved back up to first division one year later; but after only winning one game that year and losing in the first round of the play-offs they moved back down to the second Division. This year they are currently 4-0 in the Currie Division and look to win a varsity championship since 1997.

Varsity Girls Volleyball

River East has always had a very strong varsity girls volleyball team. The season is from September till mid November. They were provincial champions 4 times in a row from 1997-2001. Every year they have played very strong against one of the strongest teams which is Lord Selkirk. This year the 2010-11 team was KPAC champions and beat Lord Selkirk in provincial finals.

Junior Varsity Girls Basketball

River East has a very successful reputation for sports, one of them being basketball. The JV teams participate in KPAC, with the season starting in December, and ending in March. As well with these games, they participate in many tournaments. Throughout the years they have won many KPAC banners and they sometimes participate in the provincials.
In the past, the JV girl basketball team have won the KPAC conference in these years (There were many back-to-back wins):

Girls Hockey Program

The girls Hockey season at river east runs from about October to March. While not at the top of the league this year they were 2006/2007 WWHSL II champions. In this 2010-1011 season they are playing in the B division. They’re being led by their coach Mr Akerstream, and captain Taylor Bell. With a team of 3 goalies and 12 players they currently have no wins.

Boys Hockey

The River East Kodiaks boy’s hockey team is ranked number 7 in the top 10 for the “AAAA” division in Manitoba. The coach of the boy’s hockey team is Mr. Zajac and his team’s record this year is 6-6 and they are in 3rd place. How many championships have they won? Well they have won in 2000-01, 1995–96 and 1993-94 so they have won 3 championships and they are on the hunt to get another one soon. The team is made up of grades 10, 11 and 12.

Girls Soccer

River East girls soccer team has been very successful the last 15 years. The outdoor soccer team has won 9 out of the last 15 KPAC championships. The won in the 1995- 1996 school year, as well as 1997-1998, 2002–2003, 2003–2004, 2005–2006, 2007–2008, 2008–2009 and 2009-2010. The River East soccer team has girls from all 3 grades 10, 11 and 12. To make the team you to attend the open tryouts before the soccer season, they usually carry a roster anywhere from 14 -18 girls depending on numbers. Besides just outdoor soccer River East is one of the few schools in the KPAC division to field an indoor team as well.

Junior Varsity Football

The Junior varsity (JV) league was first introduced in 2009 and was made for grade 9 and grade 10 players only. River East joined this league in 2009 and went on to win the championship that same year. The Kodiaks did not have a JV team in the 2010 league due to lack of grade 10 player’s and loss of coaching staff. The few grade 10 players in 2010 played with the varsity Kodiak football team. In 2011 they once again had enough enrolment to form a team and are currently in the Junior Varsity Division.

CIP

CIP (Career Internship Program) is a high school to work transition program. Students involved with the program are offered on-the-job experience and classroom study to help them make the post grad transition. Although students are not paid for their work with cooperating employers, each student earns credit towards their high school diploma.

Student Council

For as long as River East Collegiate has been around, so has the student council. The student council works to make the school a better and more interesting place with weekly meetings to plan events such as school dances, spirit weeks, "Karaoke In The Caf", event fundraisers, and pep rallies.

UNESCO

(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Over the years the school has been recognized repeatedly as one of the most involved with UNESCO in Canada. The school UNESCO group has raised money to buy cows, build wells, and raise money for AIDS prevention for people in Third World Countries.

Exchange Programs

The Exchange Program is something River East specializes in. It gives opportunity to students worldwide, so they have the chance to experience a new lifestyle and culture. The amount of time they spend in their exchange home may vary depending on what it is that their school provides. Regardless, we have many different students coming from many different countries! Such as Germany, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Korea and Quebec.

Industrial Technology

River East Collegiate also offers a hands on course called Industrial Technology. In this course students will find themselves working on real automobiles and plenty of complex systems. The school insists that safety is the number one aspect in this course, teaching students not only how do get the job done, but also how to do it without harming them, their fellow students or any of the equipment. The course was designed especially for those interested in the transportation industry.

Peer Tutoring Program

The Peer Tutoring Program is a service run by the students, for the students. Students with an average of 80% or higher in a course offer their talents by signing up for this program in hopes of helping other students meet their goals. This service is alvailable to all grades for both tutoring and being tutored. Once a tutor and a tutee are matched up they simply choose a specific time to meet and then they are all ready to go. The program is monitored by the River East Collegiate resource teacher. Students who volunteer to be a tutor are awarded by the school at the end of the year.

The Advanced Placement Program

River East Collegiate, along with many other schools, offers the Advanced Placement program (A.P.). If you feel that regular courses are not enough of a challenge, then AP may be a good choice for you. AP is a program designed for students in grades 10, 11 and 12 that are willing to learn at a higher level. Students get ready for university by learning about time management and receive an amount of work a university student would get. Teachers recommend that you have a 75% or higher in regular courses if you choose to enroll in AP courses. Many courses are offered at this level. Some of these courses are math, English, geography, French, biology, chemistry and others. Some students that take Advanced Placement courses can even get their first year university credit - saving time and money.
Also to make up for the fact that normal courses are not as difficult, AP students receive an additional 5% to their final mark in their AP course.

Art Program

River East Collegiate has a program in art.
Art journals are a common vehicle for storing ideas and a place to help expand your artistic skills and confidence. It also bridges the huge gap between brain and canvas. Throughout the 3 years in the art program, students will develop an art journal (sketch book).
In grade 10, there is an intro to drawing assignments. Students do a lot of pen & ink work, learn to value study and are required to have at least 10 sketches in their journal by the end of the semester. Also, colour is studied, what it is, how it affects our everyday life and what one can do with it.
Grade 11- You also have a sketching journal, you focus a lot on collages with different mediums and Art History, by the end of the semester your focus is on printmaking.
Finally, in grade 12, students have developed a portfolio of everything that they have done for the past 2 years. Final sketching of journal pieces, more studying of art history and the skills students have learned the past couple years are used to make your own pieces.

Drama Program

River East is also well known for putting on great annual performances. For the 2010-2011 school year, River east will be putting on a remake of the 1998 musical Footloose, the first musical in fifteen years. Auditions were held in October, and the cast and crew will be working hard up until the three performances starting April 12, 2011
