RMIT Union is an unincorporated subsidiary company owned by RMIT University
. It was formed in 1968 and currently it consists of Four main branches including RMIT Union Arts, RMIT Sports and Recreation, RMIT City Fitness and RMIT Union Administration. RMIT Union is responsible for running all Arts and Sports activities on Campus. Most RMIT Union Activities are focussed on the City Campus, however some activities occur on all RMIT Campuses. RMIT Union is separate organization to the RMIT Student Union
which provides all student clubs other than Sports & Arts clubs.
The RMIT Union Arts Council is the organisation responsible for providing funding for students as individuals, groups and collectives wishing to create arts programs and events. Membership is made up of an elected student representative from each collective, a representative from each Arts Council funded project and two general members elected at the RMIT Union AGM
RMIT Music
RMIT Music
is the organisation responsible for all Music collectives either by direct control or by affiliation(except the RMIT Concert Choir). It operates as a collective under the Arts Council. However unlike other collectives RMIT Music has many separate bands and the RMIT Music Committee operates in a similar way to the Arts Council itself. The President of this collective is David Garrick. The main bands involved in RMIT Music are:
Stream Collective
The Stream Collective is a club that specialises in sound art
. Stream members do live A-V performances, adventurous sound, screenings and installations. Their main yearly event is "Live Feeding" which is a one night Sound Art event held at the Old Melbourne Gaol at RMIT Orientation. The President of this collective is Marco Cher-Gibbard.
Theatre in Bars
Theatre in Bars is an Arts Collective that organizes theatre
shows each Semester. The Collective was established in 2006 and its President is Michelle Lee. In 2008 Theatre in Bars members wrote and performed two shows, Sneakers and The Talking Vagina.
Within Earshot
Within Earshot is an Arts Collective that uses current and past technology to create surround sound
activities. It explores all aspects of surround sound in unique ways

RMIT Union provided sports, recreation, arts and theatre as it does now but also dental, child care and legal services as well as a Union Shop and cafeterias. The Union had provided its services in numerous locations around the university but 1980-82 Union House (Building 8) was built. It was opened in 1982 by Victorian Premier, Hon. John Cain ,and Kevin Mathew Dodson-Geary,the President of the RMIT Student Union,and became the central home of the RMIT Union. Later Union House was given extra floors and academic departments were added into the building and RMIT Union moved some services in to the neighboring building 28. RMIT Union eventually expanded into the Bundoora Campus delivering services equal to those on the City Campus.
legislation that took effect in July 2006 significant funding was lost by RMIT Union causing the Union to effectively start again. Almost the entire staff was turned over around this time and City Campus
became the only place where RMIT Union had a physical and staff presence except for a part time staff member at both Brunswick & Bundoora Campuses. Following this reform the Union radically changed into what it is today.
