The Prix des Sablons was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. It was uninterrupted during World War II, although it was switched to Maisons-Laffitte
in 1944 and 1945. Its distance was extended to 2,100 metres at this venue, but it reverted to 2,000 metres in 1946.
The event was renamed the Prix Ganay in 1949. This was in memory of Jean de Ganay (1862–1948), a race organiser and former president of a horse racing governing body at that time, the Société d'Encouragement. He also owned and bred racehorses, including As d'Atout, the winner of the Grand Prix de Paris
in 1911. For a period the Prix Ganay was held in early April.
The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Prix Ganay was classed at the highest level, Group 1. Its distance and date were also modified, and since then it is has been contested over 2,100 metres in late April or early May.
The leading horses from the Prix Ganay often go on to compete in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
