Pine Island is not a permanent island, but exists when the area floods. The island is named for the black cypress pines that grow locally.
This region was first settled by the British in 1820 by Charles Throsby
who explored the Canberra area (then known as Canberry or Kamberry) looking for the Murrumbidgee River. He came across the river near Pine Island in April 1821.
The area is a well known for picnicing and swimming during summer. There is a bushwalking path called the Murrumbidgee River Corridor that runs between Pine Island, past Red Rocks Gorge, to Kambah Pool.
