Early life

Gill was born in India

 and moved to Canada at age fourteen. He has a diploma in Private Investigation and was the senior vice-president of Paramount Manufacturing during his first run for public office in 2006. In 2008, he ran a family-owned business in the hospitality sector. He has volunteered with the Malaysian Singapore Cultural Association and the Peel Regional Police.

During the 2011 election, Gill was accused by Dhalla, who was struggling to recover from her "nannygate" scandal, of exploiting his special relationship with the immigration minister to expedite visa applications for her constituents to win votes. He would go on to defeat her by a substantial margin.
