The population of the urban centre was measured at 3,358 people in the 2006 census, and that of the suburb proper which includes some surrounding rural area at 4096 people. It grew rapidly during a boom in housing in 1988.

Old Bar has a thriving community market the fourth Sunday of each month, from 8.30 a.m. to noon.

The October Long weekend is the Old Bar Beach Festival, including many events and a World record Kombi Gathering event held every year.

Coastal Community Church Services the Old Bar and surrounding community, counselling, youth mentoring, church services (9:30am, Sundays) among other things are available. Pastor Eric Trad is heading up the church at current.
