. The party is led by Erland Skattem, a retired military officer. The party advocates strengthening of national defence and introduction of a presidential system with direct elections to an executive head of state.

NRA was founded ahead of the 2005 parliamentary elections. The party presented a list with 11 candidates in Sør-Trøndelag, headed by Skattem. In total the party got 92 votes.
