Netherne Mental Hospital opened in 1903 and closed in 1994. The hospital was known to be progressive in both its treatment of, and rehabilitation from, mental illness throughout the period in which it operated.

The former hospital estate was sold by the Secretary of State for Health to MJ Gleeson during 1995, with development of a new village commencing shortly afterwards. The Administration block, chapel, water tower, convalescent villas and echelon design ward blocks have been converted by MJ Gleeson.

Now living in an attractive community, Netherne residents can enjoy a strong community feel which has been strengthened following the opening of the village hall in 2011.
