To date, she has written about 15 novels, 70 short stories and many essays. The main theme in her works is gender equality and the depiction of women's family life in India.

She is best known for her work Ramayana Vishavrukshamu, published in 1974, criticizing the Hindu epic Ramayana

. This book was a three volume series with each volume running up to 700 pages. She won the Andhra Pradesh Government Sahitya Akademi Award for the novel 'Balipitham' in 1965.

Though she is very aggressive regarding Hindu mythological epics, she never dared to touch the mythological epics of other religions. She knows well the consequences if she does to other religions what she did to Hindu religion.

She also preached Coliving as she has been living with Mr Gandhi who is 12 years younger to her without marrying him and she does this under the same roof where her sons and daughter-in-laws live together. Thus she can be hailed as a great lady who turned down the male dominated social fabric
