The scarce economic resources forced many villagers to emigrate oversees, starting in the 15th Century and running until the 19th Century. In 1900 the old road was built to the village. The tunnel of Mergoscia was built in 1997-98. With easier access to the village, many of the houses became vacation homes.

Geography

Mergoscia has an area, , of 12.14 square kilometres (4.7 sq mi). Of this area, 0.42 km² (0.162162906608865 sq mi) or 3.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 8.17 km² (3.2 sq mi) or 67.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.31 km² (0.119691669163686 sq mi) or 2.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.63 km² (0.243244359913297 sq mi) or 5.2% is either rivers or lakes and 1.25 km² (0.482627698240669 sq mi) or 10.3% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 1.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.7%. Out of the forested land, 53.9% of the total land area is heavily forested, while 10.7% is covered in small trees and shrubbery and 2.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 1.0% is used for growing crops and 1.7% is used for alpine pastures. Of the water in the municipality, 4.6% is in lakes and 0.6% is in rivers and streams. Of the unproductive areas, 8.7% is unproductive vegetation and 1.6% is too rocky for vegetation.
