. Maxie's first true love was cop Jesse Beaudry, who she met while she was at the hospital after collapsing. Jesse went on the run after he was blamed for a murder he didn't commit and Maxie decided to help him out. While on the run for several weeks, they posed as a couple in order to prevent people from getting suspicious about who they were. Back in Port Charles, they had fallen in love with each other, much to Mac's dismay, who didn't like the sight of his daughter growing up. Maxie never got to tell Jesse she loved him. Jesse was killed at a carnival, in the line of duty. While he was in surgery, Maxie admitted to Monica that she was in love with Jesse. Maxie was devastated when he died and she had to let his organs be donated. She fell into a dark place, partying all the time and she turned to Jesse's partner and her childhood crush Lucky for comfort.

Lucky Spencer

This resulted in an affair between the two. On Memorial Day, almost 2 months after Jesse's death, Maxie and Lucky kissed over his grave. Even though Lucky was married to Elizabeth Webber

, it didn't stop him from sleeping with Maxie. Lucky was also addicted to painkillers at the time, and in order to keep Lucky with her, Maxie kept providing him with drugs, which she could easily steal from the hospital. Lucky promised Maxie he would leave Elizabeth for her. The two were caught by Elizabeth, Lucky realized they wouldn't continue their affair, and he decided to kick his habit and win Elizabeth's heart back. Maxie didn't want to lose Lucky, and there had recently been a faulty condom ordeal, resulting in many pregnancies. So she told him she was pregnant with his baby. After coming in Kelly's with a belly, we see Maxie walk out and pull up her shirt, revealing a fake belly. One night at Kelly's Maxie is chasing Lucky up the stairs and sees a perfect out. She grabs onto him and he pulls away, she throws herself down the stairs. Lucky rushes her to the hospital. She hides her "belly" and the doctor believes she has a miscarriage. Maxie fakes cramps and Elizabeth eventually realizes the truth. Maxie tells Lucky herself that she was never pregnant and hid a pillow under her belly, switched blood samples and was on her period at time of the miscarriage. Lucky tells Maxie she was the worst mistake he ever made.

and a team of 7 people, who wanted to retrieve something from the vault of the hotel. However, due to the silent alarm button being pressed, Maxie and one of the hostage takers, who was going by the name of "Three" were locked inside the vault. While stuck in the vault together for the next 12 hours, they developed a bond, exchanging stories about their life and confessing in each other about their horrible deeds. When the hostage ended, Maxie convinced the cops that "Three" was actually a guest who had been taken hostage as well, and the man was let go.

The Bet/Georgie's Death

"Three" showed up at Maxie's house, begging her for help, and formally introduced himself as Cooper Barrett. Although Maxie first refused, claiming she had cost her father enough problems already, she eventually caved, and got Cooper a job as security at the rebuild Metro Court. They had a flirtatious relationship. On the anniversary of Jesse's death, Maxie told Coop to stay away from her and she was bad for everyone. Coop was already falling for her and the two made love, entering a relationship. However, having been damaged by the events of the previous years, Maxie had become extremely jealous, as well as self-destructive. When she suspected Cooper had taken interest in Maxie's enemy Lulu Spencer

, she made a deal with Cooper's former Army buddy Logan Hayes, who wanted to sleep with Maxie. She promised him if he could get Lulu to sleep with him, and therefore keep her away from Cooper, then she would sleep with Logan. Logan agreed, but as the plan progressed, he started to fall in love with Lulu. Maxie eventually tried to call off the bet. She told Logan the deal was off. He could leave Lulu alone. Logan told her he was falling for Lulu. Maxie said fine but told him even Lulu deserved better. That same moment, Cooper admitted how much he cared for Maxie. However, unable to help herself after realizing Logan was in love with Lulu, she blackmailed him and told him she would tell everyone bout their bet if he wouldn't sleep with her, Logan agreed but seemed to be happy with it, resulting in Maxie and Logan having very passionate sex a few times. While having a discussion about this later, along with making out again, Cooper walked in on the two of them. Although he didn't immediately break up with Maxie, but at dinner at the Metro Court a few nights later, he admitted he couldn't watch her self-destruct any longer, and ended their relationship. Devastated, Maxie turned to her sister for comfort and admitted she loved Cooper. Not much time later, there was a Black and White Ball at Nikolas' castle, to which everyone was invited. The guest were soon aware of the fact a serial killer had followed them to the castle and was out to get them. After a night full of horror and fear, Maxie escaping near death twice and the death of Emily Quartermaine, they were released the next morning and Maxie returned home with Georgie and Cooper. On Thanksgiving, she and Cooper reconciled, after he admitted her missed her and wanted to give it another chance. Their happiness wouldn't last long, because the serial killer had come to Port Charles and strangled Georgie. Cooper was the prime suspect, and asked Maxie to go to Canada with him, to which she agreed. However, when going to his room to leave, she found him hanging in his room. The cops closed the case, as they were sure Coop was the serial killer and had committed suicide afterwards. Maxie however, grief stricken by the death of her sister and boyfriend in less than a month, refused to believe this and intended to prove Coop's innocence, teaming up with Damian Spinelli

. On Valentine's Day, she opened the gift from Coop she had found in his room which he had been planning to give to her on that day. It was a bracelet with a note that said "You'll always have a heart to fall back on, mine. I love you, Coop.

Friendship with Lulu and Johnny

The deaths of her sister and boyfriend had devastated Maxie, and she had to learn how to deal with this. She befriended Georgie's best friend Spinelli and was also moved more into Jason Morgan's orbit, who was Spinelli's boss. Maxie got a job as Kate Howard's assistant, although she was soon joined by enemy Lulu Spencer. In order to get back at Lulu, she hit on Johnny Zacchara

, a guy Lulu was into. Although amused by her attempts to have sex with him, Johnny told Maxie he wasn't interested, he wanted Lulu. At the same time, Lulu had broken up with Logan, who couldn't handle this very well and started stalking Lulu. At one point, he blamed Maxie for what happened, and he attacked her at Crimson's late at night. Lulu witnessed the attack and Logan came after her. In order to defend herself, Lulu grabbed a knife to protect herself, and Logan was accidentally stabbed to death. Maxie and Johnny were the only ones who knew what Lulu had done, and Johnny soon decided to take the blame and protect Lulu. While Johnny was in jail, Lulu slowly started to break down and was admitted to a mental institution. Feeling sorry for her, Maxie visited her a few times, cheering her up with gifts and even snuck her out of the institution once. After Lulu was released and Johnny was cleared from all charges, Maxie and Lulu continued their newfound friendship, although they often snapped at each other like old times.

Maxie and Johnny had an attraction that was deeper then physical and it grew when Lulu and Maxie became roommates. The night of the hotel crisis, Maxie and Johnny found Robin and took Emma to the hospital, pretending to be her parents. Later that night they found an old garage and ended up drinking a few beers. They kissed and almost had sex in order to destroy their respective relationships but stopped before going all the way. They went to the hospital for Lulu and Spinelli, who were trapped inside. At Crimson, Kate decided Maxie and Johnny would be a good couple. She began paying Johnny $1,000 a night to go to parties with Maxie. They began to attend events very often together, much to the dismay of Lulu and Spinelli. Once in the limo, the two made out. Johnny even admitting he liked looking at Maxie not because of her looks but because she was her.

Johnny made the revelation to Lulu about the kiss and it ended up in a big fight between the three of them. Afterwards, Johnny and Maxie met on the pier and he told her to leave because if she didn't he was going to kiss her. She didn't. Maxie and Johnny kissed. Spinelli caught the two. Maxie admitted to Spinelli she would never be attracted to him the way she was with Johnny. Lulu and Maxie's friendship was seemed to be broken, Lulu even drawing a line over the apartment. Maxie and Johnny eventually decided to go against their feelings for the sake of everyone else. Eventually, Lulu forgave them, and although she and Johnny broke up, she remains friends with Maxie.

Spinelli

After proving Cooper wasn't the serial killer, Maxie befriended geeky Spinelli

and soon confided in him about her fears and pain. Spinelli developed a crush on Maxie that she never returned, stating she only wanted to be friends. They slept together in the summer of 2008, but Maxie felt ashamed of taking advantage of Spinelli and said she didn't want to ruin their friendship by sleeping together. When Spinelli was hit by a car during a stakeout, Maxie temporarily moved into Jason's penthouse, where Spinelli also lived. Here, she and Jason had a rare and genuine conversation, where she almost acknowledged there might be deeper feelings toward Spinelli. When Maxie was attacked one night by Russian mobsters, Mac became furious and forbade Maxie to ever see Spinelli again, as Spinelli's dangerous lifestyle and connection to mobsters is what got Maxie attacked in the first place.

Maxie refused to give into her father's demands, and started questioning her feeling for Spinelli when he met a woman named Winnifred Leeds, who, much like himself, was a computer geek. Due to Maxie's jealousy, she seduced Spinelli, and after he realised her reasons for sleeping with him, it resulted in a huge fight in which they temporarily ended their friendship. However, Maxie immediately regretted her harsh words and sought out Spinelli to apologize, only to watch him getting arrested for hacking into the FBI database. During this time, there was also a crisis at the hospital. Maxie got into a lot of trouble while trying to save her niece, as well as trying to find Spinelli, who was released shortly before and was trapped inside the hospital

Shortly after however, she sought out and followed Spinelli who had gone on the run to avoid being arrested again, and persuaded him to return home where he could be proven innocent

Maxie and Spinelli eventually entered an exclusive relationship after Spinelli sang for her during a Karaoke Night. Spinelli recently proposed to Maxie, but she left without giving an answer, later admitting to Lulu that she wasn't ready for marriage. Spinelli tried to propose again on the rooftop of a building, but Maxie explained she wasn't ready yet and she wanted to take things slowly, as they had only just gotten together. However, this didn't stop Spinelli from proposing for the third time on a family dinner, in front of Maxie's father Mac, who had already disapproved of the possible engagement.

Maxie defends Spinelli when Mac disagrees with Spinelli's decision. She presses Spinelli to defy Mac and propose to her right then. Maxie, wishing to get Mac angry, accepts the proposal. Mac later tells Maxie he will accept them dating if he must but not marriage. Maxie continues to ignore Mac. Spinelli puts the ring on her finger, despite Mac's threats to arrest Spinelli if he does. Spinelli pulls Maxie into a hug and promises to love her forever, and it is then Maxie becomes visibly upset at what she has promised to do. From that moment on, Maxie becomes incredibily nervous and tries to find a way out, while she's busy convincing her family she wants to get married. On the day of the rehearsal, she begs Jason to help her on her wedding day. If she were to go back to her selfdestructive ways and try to run away, she'll count on him to keep her calm an drag her back to the church. Spinelli overhears this, and thinks if Maxie somehow got a chance to call off the wedding, he would lose her forever, so he rewrites his vows and hopes this will be enough to keep Maxie from calling off the wedding. However, on the wedding day, Spinelli finally realizes Maxie is willing to marry him because it's what he wants, even though Maxie is scared to death. This convinces Spinelli to call off the wedding, and they go to Jake's for the reception. In the following weeks, Spinelli and Maxie are shown to be very happy to a point where they share too much information about their sexlife with Jason Morgan.

Back to her old ways

Although she loves Spinelli, Maxie begins to wonder if their relationship can really last. She confides in Lulu that she feels smothered by Spinelli, saying he does not give her enough space and follows her around everywhere. When Maxie is later ordered by Kate to set up an art show, Maxie meets the artist Robert "Franco" Frank

), who recreates crime scenes, right down to the chalklines used to mark the place and position of murder victims. Although Maxie tells Lulu that Franco is very creepy, Maxie is intrigued by him. Partly because Kate tells her she must convince Franco to do a photo shoot for Crimson, Maxie accepts his offer to duck out of the art show and go back to his studio, despite the fact he insists she wear a blindfold so the location can remain secret. He asks Maxie to lie down on the floor, and when he starts to take photos of her, she pulls off the blindfold to discover that he has placed her inside one of his chalk outlines, making her angry. She tells him that her sister was murdered. He apologizes. Maxie picks up on the fact he lies a lot in their conversation, but is very engaged in him and what he is saying nonetheless. While they are talking on the Nov. 24, 2009 episode, he asks her age and she says 23. (A sidenote on Maxie's age: This suggests GH has suddenly aged Maxie by four years, as she should be only 19. An episode around Christmastime 2008 had Maxie seeing her own tombstone with the year she was born as 1990, reinforcing the fact GH considered her character to be age 19 less than a year earlier.) Franco asks whether Maxie has her life all figured out so young and, since she claims not to be interested in his advances, offers to take her back to the art show and her boyfriend. She refuses to go and ends up sleeping with him. She confides in Lulu the next morning, saying she has never been with someone so "intense" before. Feeling sick, Maxie skips Thanksgiving dinner with the family. Spinelli comes over with turkey soup for them to share.

Maxie is distressed to learn Franco has sent Jason Morgan a photo of her (blindfolded and laying on the floor inside a chalkline). She tells Jason about going to Franco's studio, but not about sleeping with him, and recalls that Franco referred to Jason as an "artist." Maxie calls Lucky Spencer for help in tracking down Franco, so she can recover the photos and destroy them to ensure Spinelli never sees them. On 12/10/09 Sam and Maxie have an argument while Maxie is criticizing Jason's apartment and over Franco. Sam knows Maxie slept with Franco. Sam tells Maxie to stop because Jason is at Franco's studio and he is risking his life to protect her and just as Spinelli walks in the door Sam tells Maxie all she cares about is covering up the fact she slept with Franco. Spinelli forgives Maxie for sleeping with Franco, although it takes him some time to actually get over it.

When he fears Maxie is starting to feel attracted to Johnny again, he tries to recreate the moments in which Spinelli and Maxie got to know each other better and fell in love with each other. The plan ends in a disaster when the two are stuck in a storm drain all night. Maxie gets hypothermia and starts to feel really ill. Where Spinelli fantasizes about being her hero. After the night, Johnny finds them and rushes Maxie to the hospital where she is admitted. She temporarily discharges herself, but is brought in once again by Lulu and Kate after she wouldn't stop coughing and feeling sick. It's revealed Maxie has gotten pneumonia as a result of being stuck in the storm drain all night, and Spinelli finally realizes he keeps putting Maxie's life at risk by trying to be a hero, and tells Jason he considers breaking up with Maxie for her own safety. When Maxie's condition starts to get worse, she is visited by Georgie's spirit, who asks her if she wants to come with her or get another shot at life. After witnessing Spinelli begging her to live, Maxie decides she wants to live for Spinelli, and Georgie sends her back with no memories of the moment shared.

Maxie is later asked by Jason to testify on his behalf and make sure lawyer Claire will never find out she saw Michael's car at the night of Claudia's murder. Maxie agrees to do so, and while Sonny and Carly don't think Maxie will help them. Maxie puts up quite a show and makes sure Claire and the judge don't know anything about Michael being there at the night of the murder. Jason responds with gratitude, apologizing for his often rude behavior towards her, and tells her he knew she would pull through for him. Sadly, however, all of their efforts amount to nothing; Dante discovers Michael was the one who killed Claudia and turns him in, but everyone is taken aback when the judge unfairly sentences Michael to five years in prison for manslaughter.

Matt Hunter

After the trial is over, Jason joins Michael in prison to keep him safe, which causes Spinelli to get depressed and closed off, and all of Maxie's many attempts to gain his attention are futile. When Maxie has a run-in with Matt

at the hospital, she comes up with the idea to have Matt think she's interested in him, to have Spinelli see them together and regain Spinelli's attention. Robin warns Maxie it's a bad idea, but Maxie refuses to listen and spends the rest of her day with Matt, her first step in her absurd plan. Patrick tells Robin that Matt and Maxie reminds him of himself and Robin with the love/hate relationship. More dates follow, and it leads to a kiss between Maxie and Matt in Jakes. Maxie later decides to phone Spinelli, to get him to walk in on her and Matt while kissing in the penthouse, so he can win her over from Matt and they can regain their former relationship. This backfires and Spinelli breaks up with her, and after a short flirt with Lucky, Maxie and Lucky realise they're better as friends. She goes to tell Matt this, but after he hears her say she'll always love Spinelli and almost wanted to be with Lucky again, but decided against it because it'd be an unhealthy choice, Matt tells Maxie, although he really likes her, he won't be her safe guy to fall back on, a 'Door #3' because the first two didn't work out.
