Mark Madryga was born and raised in Kamloops, and graduated from NorKam Secondary School in 1981. He went on to complete three years at Cariboo College (now Thompson Rivers University), then transferred to the University of British Columbia

 where he graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Geography. Madryga went on to do a fifth year of study at the university.

. In May 1994 he began working for BCTV (now Global) as the Noon News forecaster
