 mentioned in an official The West Wing book that her character "wasn't working" and that her departure, which was decided on well before Season 1 finished up production, was amicable. Sorkin originally said that Mandy's whereabouts would be revealed in Season 2 but this never came about.

Her main story of departure came when a memo Mandy had written while working for a top challenger to President Bartlet was leaked, embarrassing the Administration. Fans of The West Wing have since adopted the phrase "Mandyville" to represent the fate of other recurring characters who appeared in fairly integral roles for several episodes but then suddenly disappeared.
