Established in 1781, its members have included John Dalton, James Prescott Joule, Tom Kilburn, Peter Mark Roget, Ernest Rutherford and Thomas Worthington.
Its Memoirs are, after the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the oldest scientific journal in the UK.
