When the 226 began in the early 1950s it was very different from the way it is today. It was a very short route, running from Golders Green

It extended again in 1992, to Alperton (Sunday evenings) and Wembley Brent Town Hall (Sundays except evenings). This was extension was withdrawn in 1995.

In 2001, Dennis Dart SLF 10.2m / Marshall Capital (DMLs) were introduced to convert it low floor.

In 2004, the route was extended in the Park Royal area from Asda to First Central Business Park and the allocation was transferred to Willesden Junction.

When fellow First London route PR1 was withdrawn in March 2007, the 226 replaced it between Park Royal and Ealing Broadway and route PR2 replaced the other half between Willesden Junction & Park Royal.

In 2008, First London retained the contract of route 226 and Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Dart (DMLs) where introduced to replace the Dennis Dart SLF / Marshall Capital (DMLs).
