On August 13, 2011, Morrison was optioned back to the New Orleans Zephyrs. Ten days later, he was called back up to the majors. In his first at-bat back, he hit a home run. On September 15, 2011, Morrison filed a grievance against the Marlins for what he termed was an unfair demotion to the minors.

When Morrison was demoted to AAA New Orleans in 2011, some wondered whether the front office was sending Morrison a message to focus more on baseball and less on his Twitter account. (He had also missed a mandatory meeting with season ticket holders and publicly criticized the Marlins' handling of a charitable event.)
