A designated place or DPL is a type of community or populated area identified by Statistics Canada for statistical purposes. DPLs are delineated for each decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places such as cities, towns and villages.DPLs are communities that lack...

It is usually a small community that does not meet the criteria used to define incorporated municipalities or Statistics Canada urban areas (areas with a population of at least 1,000 and no fewer than 400 persons per square kilometre). Designated places are created by provinces and territories, in cooperation with Statistics Canada, to provide data for submunicipal areas.

Alberta Finance and Enterprise is Statistics Canada’s provincial focal point for the identification of Alberta’s designated places.
