However, when he returns home he soon loses memory of his adventure and does not recognize Zhao when he meets her again, this time unawaringly saving her from some enemies. , where they learn that Zhao Ling'er has been captured and imprisoned by the elders of the Mount Shu Sect in the Demon Prison Tower. Li Xiaoyao and Lin Yueru break into the tower to save Zhao Ling'er and learn that she is actually a half serpent spirit. Nevertheless, they have forged a strong friendship and eventually combine efforts to escape from the tower as it starts to implode. Lin Yueru is fatally crushed by a falling boulder trying to save Li Xiaoyao and Zhao Ling'er.

The trio are saved by a herbal medicine guru, who reveals to Li Xiaoyao that Lin Yueru cannot be revived, and that Zhao Ling'er is already pregnant with his child. To save the lives of Zhao Ling'er and his unborn child, Li Xiaoyao embarks on a quest to find two special items. There he meets A'nu, who develops a crush on him. At the same time, he sees that the land of the Miao people is plagued by drought, causing the Black and White Miao to fight each other over scarce water resources. Meanwhile, Zhao Ling'er recovers after Li Xiaoyao brings back the items to her and she helps to summon a rainstorm and restore peace to the land. Li Xiaoyao, Zhao Ling'er and A'nu then learn that the drought is actually orchestrated by the evil leader of the Moon Worshipping Cult and they confront him in a battle. Although they succeed in defeating him eventually, Zhao Ling'er sacrifices herself to destroy the Water Demon Beast summoned by the villain. In the final scene, Li Xiaoyao bids A'nu farewell and wanders around in despair, saddened by the loss of his close friends. Just then, he sees an undead Lin Yueru, holding his child in her arms.

Zhao Ling'er (趙靈兒)

Zhao Ling'er is the daughter of the king of the Black Miao and chief priestess of the White Miao, and the sole heir to the throne of the Miao kingdom. She is also a descendant of the goddess Nüwa
Nüwa
Nüwa is a goddess in ancient Chinese mythology best known for creating mankind and repairing the wall of heaven.-Primary sources:...

, making her a half-human and half-serpent. She is destined to be the guardian of her land as she possesses the supernatural powers of Nüwa, inherited from her bloodline. Her father is deceived by the evil leader of the Moon Worshipping Cult and believed that her mother is responsible for a drought that plagued the kingdom. Her mother is imprisoned and Zhao Ling'er is forced into exile. Zhao Ling'er was raised like an orphan by a loyal servant, Granny Jiang, who is also a half-serpent spirit. They lived in seclusion on an island in the Eastern Sea and the island is hidden from mortal eyes by a charm.

Zhao Ling'er meets Li Xiaoyao for the first time when he travels to the island to seek a cure for his ill aunt. Li Xiaoyao accidentally peeps at Zhao Ling'er while she is bathing in a pond, and blackmails her into helping him. Granny Jiang arrives before Li Xiaoyao is able to leave and threatens to devour him if he does not marry Zhao Ling'er and remain on the island forever. Zhao Ling'er helps Li Xiaoyao escape, but Li soon loses all memory of the adventure as he had previously taken a Miao amnesiac potion. Unknowingly, Li Xiaoyao's arrival on the island had broken the protective charm and revealed the location of the island. Zhao Ling'er's enemies — the three Black Miao warriors who live in Li Xiaoyao's inn — assault the island, massacre everyone and kidnap her. Thought Li Xiaoyao no longer recognizes Zhao Ling'er, he saves her by defeating the Miao warriors.

Despite Zhao Ling'er's despair that Li Xiaoyao does not remember her, they set off on a journey to find her mother in southwestern China. While passing by Suzhou, Li Xiaoyao unexpectedly defeats Lin Yueru in a martial arts contest and according to the rules, he must marry her. During the wedding night, Zhao Ling'er disappears after the sighting of a giant serpent. Li Xiaoyao and Lin Yueru pursue and find her under the care of the elder of a rural village. Later on, Zhao Ling'er is taken away by Black Miao warriors, who are then ambushed by White Miao forces, causing a battle. The leader of the Mount Shu Sect passes by and wrongly accused Zhao Ling'er of the killings, and imprisons her in the Demon Prison Tower. Li Xiaoyao and Lin Yueru eventually rescue her and learn of her true identity — a descendant of Nüwa. They fight their way out of the tower by destroying its foundations, causing the structure to implode and killing Lin Yueru in the process. After being saved by a retired Miao sorceress, Zhao Ling'er gives birth to Li Xiaoyao's daughter. She recovers her mother's magical staff with the help of A'nu and re-assumes the role of guardian of her kingdom.

Zhao Ling'er joins Li Xiaoyao and A'nu in the battle against the evil leader of the Moon Worshipping Cult and they succeed in defeating the villain. However, Zhao Ling'er sacrifices herself to destroy the ancient Water Demon Beast summoned by the villain, though she lives on as a divine being as suggested in the sequels.

Lin Yueru (林月如)

Lin Yueru is an only daughter from the prestigious Lin family of Suzhou
Suzhou
Suzhou , previously transliterated as Su-chou, Suchow, and Soochow, is a major city located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province in Eastern China, located adjacent to Shanghai Municipality. . She first meets Li Xiaoyao outside Suzhou, when she is thrashing two servants who attempted to elope. Li Xiaoyao came to the servants' aid and frees them after defeating Lin Yueru in a fight. He binds Lin Yueru to a tree as punishment, but later returns to drive away two thugs who tried to molest Lin. When Li Xiaoyao frees Lin Yueru, she attacks him with her sword, and wounds him badly before fleeing in panic. Li Xiaoyao only survived thanks to a powerful but risky healing spell cast by Zhao Ling'er.

At the same time, Lin Yueru's father is planning to find a suitable spouse for his daughter, so he stages a martial arts contest, inviting young men to participate and win his daughter's hand-in-marriage. Li Xiaoyao, still angry with Lin Yueru over the earlier incident, jumps into fight Lin and get even. Without realizing the nature of the contest, Li Xiaoyao defeats Lin Yueru and wins the marriage unwillingly. This marks the start of a complex love triangle among Li Xiaoyao, Lin Yueru and Zhao Ling'er. Zhao Ling'er disappears mysteriously on the wedding night and Li Xiaoyao and Lin Yueru set off to find her.

After finding that Zhao Ling'er is held in the Demon Prison Tower on Mount Shu, Li Xiaoyao and Lin Yueru break into the tower to rescue her. As the tower starts to crumble after the destruction of its foundation pillars (the only way to get out), Lin Yueru is hit on the head by a large falling boulder and cannot be revived. However, the Miao sorceress who healed Li Xiaoyao and Zhao Ling'er asks Li to collect 36 "puppet bugs", without explaining the purpose. After the final victory over the evil leader of the Moon Worshipping Cult, as Li Xiaoyao returns home in sorrow, an undead Lin Yueru is seen waiting for him in the snowfield holding the baby Li Yiru (Li and Zhao's daughter), presumably due to the preserving effect of the puppet bugs.

At the end of the series sequel The Legend of Sword and Fairy 2, the teenage Li Yiru acquires a resurrection pearl after the defeating the final villain, and uses it to definitively revive Lin Yueru. In the MMORPG The Legend of Sword and Fairy Online, Lin Yueru is seen as the formal wife of Li Xiaoyao and loving stepmother of Li Yiru.

A'nu (阿奴)

A'nu is the daughter of the leader of the White Miao tribes. She is an apprentice sorceress adept in healing and magical spells, having trained under the Divine Lady, an elderly Miao sorceress.

A'nu first meets Li Xiaoyao when he is on a quest to find two special items to ensure Zhao Ling'er a smooth childbirth. After Li Xiaoyao fights the Golden Phoenix to take its eggshells, A'nu suddenly appears and snatches the eggs. In surprise Li Xiaoyao falls off the giant tree and is on the verge of death, forcing A'nu to use the same healing spell that Zhao Ling'er used to revive Li. Li Xiaoyao wakes in a delirious state and mistakes A'nu for Zhao Ling'er, and hugs and kisses her. A'nu is initially upset by Li Xiaoyao's actions, but she is moved by Li's desire to save Zhao Ling'er's life and decides to help him retrieve the other item. She also starts to develop a crush on Li Xiaoyao, especially after he disappeared for a months after being warped to the past from the Nüwa Temple.

A'nu later joins Li Xiaoyao and Zhao Ling'er in the final battle against the evil leader of the Moon Worshipping Cult in order to restore peace to the Miao kingdom. Zhao Ling'er perishes in the battle even though the trio manage to achieve victory. In the ending, A'nu is seen tearfully playing a farewell tune to Li Xiaoyao on her flute.

In later sequels of the series, A'nu is revealed to have inherited the leadership of the White Miao tribes. She is reportedly never married, implying her ongoing devoted love for Li Xiaoyao.
