Mary Eliza (Lida) Hooe was born on September 14, 1875, in Hungerford, Texas
to Douglas McLean Hooe and Mary Eliza Tilley. She graduated from Dallas High School as valedictorian in 1893. Lida Hooe taught in the Dallas schools and in 1904 became the first Supervisor of Penmanship and Drawing. During one summer, she studied art in Virginia and there became acquainted with the artist Georgia O'Keefe who later visited in the Hooe home. Lida died on September 27, 1923 from breast cancer. She is buried in Oakland Cemetery.)

Lida Hooe School was named Sunset Hill School when it first was opened in 1920.
