Geography

Khamgaon is located at 20.68°N 76.57°E. It has an average elevation of 323 metres (1059 feet).

It has a very extreme climate, the winters are very cold where as the summers are very hot. Summer temperatures can go as high as 49˚C. There are also dry spells sometimes in summer. The best time to visit this place is October to December.

History

Mr. Keshavrao Janrao Deshmukh was the first President of Municipal Council of Khamgaon. He played a key role for development of the region like bringing Electricity to Khamgaon, connecting Khamagaon to the railway network, building water reservoir popularly known as ‘Januna Talav’. He also conducted All India Conference of Maratha Shikshan Parishad on 27 December 1917 at his resident at Khamgaon. The Conference was preceded by Rajeshri Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur. The purpose of the said conference was to uplift Maratha community and Poor on educational front. He was latter bestowed with the title of ‘Rao Bahadur’ by Vice Roy of India, on 1 January 1917, for the outstanding contribution for the development of the region and the society.

However, there has been long standing and ever growing demand to establish permanent labour court, consumer forum, co-operative court etc. in view of the voluminous and vast litigation. Demands have also been repeatedly made to appoint a permanent Additional Collector stationed permanently at Khamgaon which is the largest city in the entire district. An Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) is permanently provided to Khamgaon City. Khmagoan City has as many as three police stations. A Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) & Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and a Tehsildar are established in Khamgaon City.
