History

Kanigiri(Rockcity) is a historic place as the capital city of the kingdom ruled by "Katama Raju" . There are some historical monuments in and around the hill. These monuments include fort, wells at lodurgam and chennamukkabai (which is a well with seven wells depth constructed by katam raju). The only way through which we can reach lodurgam is on foot, which seems like an adventure. The surroundings of it are really beautiful. Sivalayam constructed by the king katam raju is located on the hill, called "Vijayamarthandeswara Swamy" temple. In june there will be a thiranallu called as "katama raju thirunallu".

The name kanigiri is a combination of 3 sanskrit words- KANI means -See; Giri means-Fort; Kari means -Elephant.

Kanigiri has its own socio economic and cultural traditions which stands on the top of any religion.

Earlier people there used to depend on monsoon rains for drinking water, but now Nagarjuna Sagar water is reaching the town through a plant constructed near to Doruvu in Kanigiri.

Transportation

There is no railway line in Kanigiri, but it is well connected by road to all other major and small cities in Andhra Pradesh as well as other capitals like Chennai and Banglore. Generally people use APSRTC buses for transportation. Currently only one private bus operator 'Raja Travels' is operating a bus to Hyderbad. The nearest railway line is Singarayakonda which is about 62 km far and Ongole which is about 78 km far. It is better to choose Ongole station, because,most of the Trains have a stop in Ongole. Nearest airport is Vijayawada airport which is about 200 km far and other one is Chennai airport which is about 350 km far. The Kanigiri Bus Depot is one of the most profitable depots in AP as there is no railway facility and there are no depots in pamur, CS puram, Duthaluru, Vinjamuru, SR puram etc.(other places in Prakasam District).

As of the 2001 India census,[1] kanigiri 20,123 has a population of 21,999, with a male-female split of 51%-49%. kanigiri has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 60%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
