History

Kanekal is known for its freshwater lake, into which water flows in from Tungabadra Dam. This was constructed under the influence of local resident Lakka Chinappa Reddy.

Kanekal is home to the Chikkanneshwara Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped. Every year, a temple festival is celebrated and a temple float is pulled with ropes through the town.

Kanekal is under threat of desertification, due to deforestation, overuse by agriculture, over grazing, and lack of awareness of the environment.

God by name Kanekallapa is located in the south to the town, which may be fact that kanekal has got its name by the name of Kanekallapa.

Economy

Rice is grown extensively in Kanekal and there are many rice mills located in Kanekal Crossing (8 km away from Kanekal). Drinking water from Kanekal is supplied to surrounding villages and Rayadurg town.

Facilities

There is one Government hospital and several private health clinics.

There is a state-run junior college, which draws students from the surrounding villages as well.
