People

Kalgachia is a Mia Muslim (East Bengal rooted Muslim) based town. The census of India shows that 98% people of the people in this town are Muslim. The total population is 29,000 where 17,000 are male and 12,000 are female.

Culture

The people of Kalgachia are mainly Bengali speaking, but the official language is till Assamese. They are sometimes victims of hatred from main stream Assamese people, who believe that they are "illegal infiltrators" from neighbouring Bangladesh. They are very fond of Pollygeet and Jatra Gaan.
