Andrew was later found not to be sexually abusing Billy, which forced Billy to come out of the closet to his parents and to the citizens of Llanview. Joey supported is friend Billy as he coped with coming out of the closet and the homophobia from the town and his disapproving father. Andrew later help brought the AIDS quilt to Llanview to help the town to tolerate the gay community.

Love and loss

In 1994 an adult Joey secretly romances his mother's nemesis Dorian Lord. Though initially motivated by revenge against Viki, Dorian comes to love Joey; Viki is outraged when she finds out. During a recurrence of her dissociative identity disorder

, one of Viki's alternate personalities, Jean Randolph, holds Dorian hostage in a secret room beneath Llanfair in 1995. One of the conditions of her release is to end the relationship with Joey, which she does.

, another con artist and her partner in crime who poses as her brother), but she discovers some of Clint's recent deeds and blackmails him. Despite Kelly's protests, Joey and Aubrey marry suddenly in February 2011. While Kelly insists Aubrey is only out to harm Joey and his family, her accusations cause him to push away from her. Devastated Kelly begins sleeping with John McBain resigning that Joey is in love with Aubrey. Over time Joey soon catches on to Aubrey and begins to believe his father and Kelly's accusations. In May, he discovers that Aubrey is a con artist and that Cutter was her lover and not her brother. However, Aubrey has actually fallen in love with Joey, though he is deeply hurt by her deceit. He keeps his knowledge of Aubrey's actions quiet as he and Aubrey are entrusted temporary guardianship of his nephew, Ryder. Alas, when Kelly is stabbed by a deranged Marty Saybrooke

 and left for dead the revelation causes Joey to realize he is still in love with Kelly. As she is in the hospital he never leaves her side and declares he will divorce Aubrey so they can have a second chance, a promise he quickly delivers on after Jessica is self-integrated from her DID alters. On July 21, 2011, Joey and Aubrey are officially divorced from each other, allowing both Joey and Kelly to reignite their romantic relationship with each other again. In August 2011, Joey announces that he is moving back to London with Kelly so that she can be closer to her son Zane Buchanan. Aubrey then shows up at his doorstep at Llanfair to give back her engagement ring to him after learning that Joey is leaving town with Kelly. Joey lets Aubrey keep the ring because he gave it to her in "good faith", despite the fact that she originally married him for his money. Aubrey and Joey then hug each other before they say good-bye to each other. Aubrey then says good-bye to Kelly and wishes her the best of luck with her rekindled romantic relationship with Joey. Joey then says good-bye to his family as he departs with Kelly to go back to London to be with Kelly's son Zane on August 24, 2011.
