on loan. He scored on his debut in the 3–0 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge
on 1 November 2003 and made seven league appearances for the Shaymen before being recalled to Scunthorpe in December. In January 2004, it seemed as if he would be allowed to leave Glanford Park
on a free transfer and he agreed terms to join Lincoln City
at the beginning of February, only for the deal to be blocked. Five weeks after initially agreeing terms, a Football League tribunal ruled that McCombe could join Lincoln once they had given Scunthorpe seven days notice of their intentions, and he joined the Imps on a contract initially lasting until the end of the 2003–2004 season. As part of the deal, McCombe had to sign a confidentiality agreement with the Football League
