The ideas for establishing the institute came about as a result of the worldwide enlightenment that psychiatry

 was going through at that time. Social orientation was experiencing a strong growth, thanks to rapid development of psycho-pharmacological-therapy. The possibility of treating patients with medication and therapy has increased the efficiency of psychiatric institutions and has given the opportunity to psychiatric patients to be cured within the community. Patients are able to lead relatively normal lives while undergoing medical care.

On 18 November 2009, The Institute of Mental Health in Belgrade was inaugurated in the WHO

The Institute of Mental Health in Belgrade started organized working on the primary prevention of psychiatric diseases, comprehensive treatment of patients in the institution, and monitoring across out-patient treatment. After the adoption of the project, whose creator is the architect Vladeta Stojaković, on 5 June 1960 the cornerstone of the Institute was placed. The Institute of Mental Health officially started to work on 14 April 1963 in the former socialist Yugoslavia.

For the convenience of the population of Belgrade, the Institute provides secondary health care in compliance with the law.

IMH Belgrade also performs an educational and scientific research program in compliance with law. An international project was started at the Institute of Mental Health in Belgrade which entailed the research of genetic copy number variation as potential risks for mental illness
