During the year 2009 mouth of the Illovo River moved significantly, moving north by approximately 0.7 kilometers within a year from the original mouth at Illovo beach
. During the year 2009, there was no open river mouth as the river continued to move northwards towards the area known as Winklespruit beach. Later the river opened into the sea at a point approximately 500m north of the original mouth. In 2010 construction machinery was used to divert the river mouth back to its original place as concern was high that the river may cause damage to nearby residential property.
The name Illovo is derived from the Zulu
name of a tree called "ilovo".
