Hutt Valley Expressway
Encyclopedia
The Hutt Valley Expressway is a 20 km (12 mi) section of State Highway 2, running from the end of the Wellington Urban Motorway at the Ngauranga
Ngauranga
Ngauranga is a suburb of New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, in the lower North Island. Situated on the western bank of Wellington Harbour, it lies to the north of the centre of the city. It is a Maori name meaning "the landing place", and the original spelling was "Nga-Uranga"...

Seagull intersection

at Fergusson Drive and River Road. The road has two names: Hutt Road from the Ngauranga Interchange to the Petone Overbridge, and Western Hutt Road from the Petone Overbridge to Fergusson Drive.

Design

The road is mainly two lanes each way, with a three-lane northbound section just south of the Belmont Hills intersection. The road is dual carriageway except for a small section between the Petone Overbridge and the Petone Railway Station

.

Only three intersections are not at-grade, the others being major ones controlled by traffic lights and minor ones controlled by Give Way and Stop signs. The Dowse, Petone, and Nguaranga interchanges are grade-separated.

Improvements

In recent years, works have been started to improve safety along the road.

The section between the Petone and Normandale Overbridges is currently being improved by the Dowse to Petone project, which will eliminate three sets of traffic lights and replace them with a grade separated roundabout and an overbridge.

Several minor intersections have been improved to prevent traffic turning right into or out of the minor roads, and there are provisions to replace the Melling and Haywards intersections with grade-separated interchanges in the future.

Interchanges

All interchanges are at-grade unless otherwise specified.
