 and has also gained the second specialism of Science which also deems the school a Science College. In January 2011, the school was granted Academy Status which became active at the start of the 2011/2012 Academic Year.

For the last few years the headmaster has been Andrew Stringer who was deputy head until Ian Sharp retired from teaching. Since Mr Sharp took over as head some years ago, the school has made a dramatic increase in its exam results, and has shot up the table.

. They have also a built a new sports hall which is the size of 4 badminton/basketball courts, which can also be turned into an indoor football arena. At the start of 2007/2008, a whole new food cookery classroom was made, the first in the school. Hurstmere is partnered with Blackfen School for Girls

Hurstmere annually holds a Prize Giving ceremony which commends students who have done exceptionally well in their subjects. The prizes are presented by a guest speaker who is usually associated with the school or its specialist subjects. In 2009 the guest speaker was freerunner Damien Walters

 and in 2010 the guest speaker was former pupil and highly successful businessman Andy Priston.

In July 2011, Hurstmere celebrated its best ever GCSE results. 85% of students gained at least five A* to C grades with 58% gaining five A* to C grades in subjects including Maths and English.

Ties

The school's tie colours all depend on the year of a pupil. The colours stay with the pupils until the start of year 10. At the moment:

Year 7 - Black Stripes

Year 8 - Purple Stripes

Year 9 - Green Stripes

Year 10 - Silver horses

Year 11 - Gold horses

There are exceptions to the tie colours, if a pupil has excelled in either Physical Education
