Ellis joined Wasps Academy in 2006 after having had a very pleasing 2005–06 season, despite still being at school he was able to establish himself in Wasps A side to make eight appearances over the A's 15 game season. Having played for Wales at U16 level he was selected for England U19s Six Nations game against Italy was followed by a trip to Dubai for the U19 World Championships, where he helped England to third place in the final standings. He later captained the England U20s side. A useful cricketer, Ellis represented Middlesex U13.
