The possibility of developing a relationship with a secondary school in Tanzania was proposed in September 2000. Mike Knox (Depute Head Teacher) visited Tanzania in December 2000 and met with the Director of Education whom suggested a school in the Kilimanjaro area of the diocese. Upon his return it was agreed that a relationship would be entered into subject to the agreement of the partner school. This was formalised during a visit to Tanzania in July 2001 by 6 pupils and 4 members of staff.
And in 2007 This became an award winning partnership:

Fairtrade School

On 21 June 2010 Holy Rood High School was awarded Fairtrade Status. Two years previously the Fairtrade Steering Group consisting of pupils, parents and teachers met for the first time.

The Holy Rood Fairtrade policy, which has the support of our Senior Leadership Team, Pupil Council, Parent Council and staff, will focus our work in the coming years as we build on what we have already achieved.
Pupils learn about Fairtrade within Food and Textiles Technology, Geography, Business Studies and RME. Fairtrade products are sold at our Tuck Shop and used at a variety of school events including meetings, Parents’ Evenings and Feast Day celebrations.

With the support of Jim and Morag Baird from The Just World shop in Portobello they have established a successful Tuck Shop which is run by Second Year pupils and we are planning to start a staff Tuck Shop in the New Year. Holy Rood have created further links with our local community through Fairtrade events that we have organised.

Fairtrade events have included launching a loyalty card for our regular Tuck Shop customers, special offers to promote new products and running a Smoothie bar. We have organised and delivered Fairtrade workshops to Pupil Council members from Holy Rood and our cluster primary schools and promoted Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight at one of our local Churches. Each year we try to spend a weekend away together planning for the coming year and developing our idea of what it means to be a Fairtrade school.
