It is similar to Hippotion batschi, but distinguishable by the narrow white dorsal line on the abdomen. The upperside of the thorax and abdomen has a narrow white dorsal line. The forewing upperside is dark purplish-brown. The first and second postmedian lines are very narrow but discernible, the fourth and fifth lines are shaded in dark brown and highlighted in pale purplish-grey along the basal edge.
