On arriving in Buenos Aires in September 1933 from his Embassy in Chile, Sir Henry Chilton opened a lengthy and increasingly desperate negotiation with London about the state of his official residence.

During the Spanish Civil War he was strong admirer of the Nationalist. He refused to relocate to Madrid

 and preferred to stay in Hendaye

, because of the Republican atrocities. He was replaced by Samuel Hoare, a.k.a. Samuel Gurney Hoare, (1880 - 1959), also a parafascist admirer of General Francisco Franco

's new dictatorship on the war-torn country. He was then suspended of work, apparently, but figured later in the British Ministry of Information pay lists since 1945.
