. The federation is a not-for-profit charitable organisation whose stated key aim is "to promote the education of young people in South London". The group is generally oversubscribed in most of it's Academies, particularly Harris City Academy Crystal Palace with an average of 1,500 applicants for 200 spaces.

The Chief Executive Officer

 is Dr Daniel Moynihan, previously Principal of the Harris City Academy Crystal Palace. He is the full time CEO at the Harris Federation Headquarters in South Norwood. The Federation aims to grow to 25 or more Primary and Secondary Academies in the next few years.

On 18 February 2011 it was announced that Kelsey Park Sports College and Cator Park School would convert into Harris Academies for September 2011, the first Harris Academies to open the London Borough of Bromley
