Geography

Gurramkonda is located at 13.7833°N 78.5833°E. It has an average elevation of 647 meters (2125 feet).

History

Gurramkonda is a Hill-Fort town. Its historical name was Zafarabad. It had over forty mosques but all of them have been ruined and and are now extinct. One Sufi saint name Hazrath Shah Kamal came from Kirman of Old Persia and settled here. He taught Islam to the locals and it spread throughout the village and its surroundings.

In the sequence of political history it was one of the fort towns for Vijayanagara kingdom. It was under the Vijayanagara kingdom and its king was Sree Krishna Deva Raya. The name Gurram Konda was given to this place because the rulers of this kingdom traveled on horses to reach their palace at the top of the steep hill. The name Gurram Konda is also thought to be derived from the two words that are associated with this historic place, Konda which means Hill and Gurram which means Horse.

There is also a tomb for Tippu Sultan's maternal uncle (his mother's brother) called Maqbeera. This is similar to all Islamic tombs built in India.

As per history heard from locals, a large deposit of diamonds and precious rocks were spreaded by king across the hill when the kingdom was attacked. Even now, lot of locals believe that treasure is hidden around the hill foot and can find diamonds also.

Economy

The economy in this town is thriving on agriculture. The most popular crops in this area are paddy, tomato and groundnut. People are warm and mostly belong to middle class and lower middle class echelons.

Demography

The small town interestingly possesses 60% of Hindu and 40% of Muslim population. While Most of Muslims are into other professions such as shopkeeping, tailoring, machine repairing, automobile, and construction work. The Hindu population, mostly Kapu (Balija) community, is into agriculture. The later generations have chosen Teaching and Police as their main professions. While the recent folk are into IT, Services, and Medicine.
