The "Narrows" section of the river features an overall drop of over 100 ft/mi with one section dropping at a horrendous rate of 350 ft/mi. Normally there would not be enough water to paddle the "Narrows" section most of the year, but controlled dam releases upstream make it possible to run it on a fairly regular basis.

The Green River hosts a race on the first Saturday of November every year.

The river is dammed to form Lake Summit, in the town of Tuxedo, North Carolina.
