Caswell's punishment was the result of his involvement (through the firm of Turner, Caswall & Co and the Sword Blade Company ) in the South Sea Company scandal; his specific offence being the acquisition – free of charge – of £50,000 of stock in the company while its formation was before parliament. In addition Turner, Caswall & Co was ordered to make a restitution of £250,000.
