.

Originally, the route was called the Gateway Arterial Road because the road was not at motorway status, the road passing through three large roundabouts north of the Brisbane River. Therefore, to cope with the heavy traffic, the government began upgrading the road in 1987. In 1990, bridges were constructed over the East-West Arterial Road (and the newly-opened Airport Drive) at Hendra, and Bicentennial Road at Boondall. Following the Toombul Road overpass in 1994, the whole route was renamed Gateway Motorway and given National Highway 1 status (replaced with Metroad 1 a year later), and by the end 1995 the full route was at motorway status.

The Gateway Bridge crossing was duplicated to provide a twelve-lane crossing by building a duplicate bridge immediately downstream to the existing structure.
The new Gateway Bridge opened on the 24th May 2010 with 4 lanes open. The remaining 2 lanes opened on 15th August 2010. The existing bridge was refurbished to match the new structure and work was completed in mid November 2010. North of the bridge the motorway was routed further east from its current placement and an additional access road, Moreton Drive, was opened which provides motorway standard access direct to the Domestic Terminal at Brisbane Airport (with exits to the International Terminal).

The old motorway was renamed Southern Cross Way in November 2010. Manual toll booth

s were removed and replaced with electronic tags for all vehicles using the motorway to cross the Gateway Bridges.

The the southern section of the motorway is currently being upgraded to six lanes from Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road to Old Cleveland Road and eight lanes from Old Cleveland Road up to the Gateway Bridge.
This work commenced in March 2010, with major construction beginning in April. Works are expected to be completed by mid-2011.
