He made his debut in April 2001 in a 1-0 home victory over Kilkenny City AFC with his first goal for the club arriving 10 days later during a 3-3 draw with Shelbourne FC. That goal made him the 100th player ever to score for Derry in the League of Ireland

, McGlynn was hit with a big blow when he was banned from football by the FAI Independent Disciplinary Committee after he admit betting on League of Ireland games. Despite the fact that he did not bet on games involving his own team, he was given with a 2 month ban. Gareth appealed this and when his appeal was heard on April 29, it was reduced to a one month ban. He returned to the starting line up but Bohemians would have a disappointing 2010 season where the club lost their league title on goal difference
