This platform, developed in Japan by Mazda, is primarily for the North American market. Although there has been many vehicles on the platform, only the Mazda6/Atenza is sold widely outside North America. Ford reportedly spent just US$1,000,000,000 on development of all CD3 models, which is about what the company would have spent on each model if they were developed independently.
Vehicles currently using this platform include the following:
Cancelled CD3 products:
CD3 2
The CD3 platform was redesigned for the 2009 Mazda 6 replacement.
The CD3 2 platform is expected to be phased out early next decade and give way to either the Ford EUCD platform currently used under the Ford Mondeo in Europe or more likely by the EUCD2 as Ford aligns its global product architecture. The next generation of Fusion, Edge, MKX and MKZ debuting in 2012-2013 are expected to be built on this platform.
