A Force Gauge is
measuring instrumentIn the physical sciences, quality assurance, and engineering, measurement is the activity of obtaining and comparing physical quantities of real-world objects and events. Established standard objects and events are used as units, and the measurement results in a given number for the relationship...
used across all industries to measure the force during a push or pull test. Applications exist in research and development, laboratory, quality, production and field environment. There are two kind of force gauges today: mechanical and digital force gauges.
A digital force gauge is basically a handheld instrument that contains a
load cellA load cell is an electronic device that is used to convert a force into an electrical signal. This conversion is indirect and happens in two stages. Through a mechanical arrangement, the force being sensed deforms a strain gauge. The strain gauge converts the deformation to electrical signals...

strain gaugeA strain gauge is a device used to measure the strain of an object. Invented by Edward E. Simmons and Arthur C. Ruge in 1938, the most common type of strain gauge consists of an insulating flexible backing which supports a metallic foil pattern. The gauge is attached to the object by a suitable...

strainStrain can refer to:* Strain , a variant of a plant, virus or bacterium; or an inbred animal used for experimental purposes* Strain , a chemical stress of a molecule...
) to electrical signals. The software and electronics of the force gauge converts the voltage of the load cell into a force value that is displayed on the instrument.
Test units of force measurements are most commonly newtons or
poundThe pound-force or simply pound is a unit of force.- Definitions :The pound-force is approximately equal to the gravitational force exerted on a mass of one avoirdupois pound on the surface of Earth...
s. The peak force is the most common result in force testing applications. It is used to determine if a part is good or not. Some examples of force measurement: door latch, quality of spring, wire testing, strength ... but most complicated tests can be performed like peeling, friction, texture.
