Clonsilla (Cluain Saileach in Irish, meaning meadow of the Willow or Sallows) is a village and district northwest of Dublin, Ireland.

Clonsilla (Cluain Saileach in Irish, meaning meadow of the Willow or Sallows) is a village and district northwest of Dublin, Ireland.
Location
Originally a small village in its own right and once home to many horse studs including the famous Ongar stud formerly owned by Prince Aly Khan and his then wife Rita Hayworth, Clonsilla is now a large residential suburban area, with Ongar and other localities developing their own subsidiary identities. It falls into the Dublin 15 postal district and the Dublin West Dáil constituency.
Transport
Clonsilla straddles the Royal canal in the Fingal county area and is linked to the city centre by the Maynooth commuter rail line and the N3. Clonsilla railway station opened on 1 September 1848 and was closed for goods traffic on 17 June 1963. The buses that provide for the Clonsilla area are the
39, 39a and 239 from Liffey Valley Shopping Centre.
Growth
Clonsilla has seen massive development in terms of residential housing in recent times, estates such as Mount Symon, Castlefield, Charnwood, Limelawn, Ravenswood, Manorfields, Portersgate, Lohunda, Aldemere and Lambourn have been developed in the past 10 years. As a result, the population of the area has risen dramatically. Hartstown is one rapid growing town that belongs to the area, it lies east of Clonsilla. It is also North of Lucan and West of Blancharstown.
Nowadays, Clonsilla is often considered to be part of the greater Blanchardstown area.
Education
Clonsilla has a number of national schools, including St. Philips National school, St. Ciarans National School, located in the Hartstown area, and St. Mochta's. There is one secondary school in the vicinity, Blakestown Community School, Hartstown Community School. Coolmine Community School is also close.
Places of interest
- The Shackleton Gardens, Beech Park. Home to famous walled garden containing many rare flower species and formerly owned by the Shackleton family. Opposite Luttrellstown Castle.
- The Royal Canal (see separate article) - for anglers, many varied species of freshwater fish such as pike, perch and roach can be caught along the banks of the canal.
