first met Rita Webb in Marbella, Spain. She married him in 1975, two years after his divorce to his first wife, the investment-banking heiress Ann Loeb. Webb gave birth to Sara the following year and had Clare two and a half years later.

Shortly after Clare's birth, Georgiana asked Edgar for a divorce. After remarrying in 1980 and a subsequent second divorce, the girls would visit their father, who owned estates outside Charlottesville, Virginia, and in Westchester County, a home in Sun Valley, and an apartment on Fifth Avenue. But their lives would be centered in England and in Kenya, with their mother.

Equestrian Career

Clare started her equestrian career at the age of 17, and after only three years began qualifying and competing at the elite level.

In December of 1999, Clare competed in the Millstreet Indoor International Horse Show with 56 other entries aboard her horse Enchante. Although she did not win the £20,000 purse, she competed closely with the likes of Katie Monaghan-Prudent, Tim Stockdale

Exactly a year and a day after winning the Grand Prix at CSI-A Eindhoven (NED), on May 26th 2002, Clare won the Grand Prix in Rome (ITA), once again riding Charlton. For Clare the victory was especially sweet; after missing the original cut for the team, she was brought in as the last minute replacement due to an injury to a competing horse.  from Oct. 3-6 2002, Clare performed the best out of the other four riders representing the USA. Aboard Lord William (Lord Caletto - Rocky, by Rousseau) a Westphalian gelding, she placed second in the Der Joker competition, and second again in another class aboard Echante, a Selle Francais gelding. Just two weeks later, from October 17-19 aboard Lord William, she won the speed and handiness competition. Clare would place 13th in the main competition aboard Enchante, the highest placing American in the competition after Kaye Levy, who placed 32nd overall.

At the height of her career, she was ranked 12th in the U.S. and 80th overall in the world. She credits her mentors and trainers as a key element of her success. She enlisted the help of three olimpian equestrians, Peter Leone a silver medalist for the 1996 Olympic team, Lauren Hough an Olympic team member for the 2000 team, as well as Henk Noreen a world renown Olympic coach based out of Belgium.
