, and in 1871 became an associate professor specializing in pharmacognosy
. He was author of the popular Illustrierte Flora von Deutschland (Illustrated Flora of Germany), which was published over several editions. From 1867 to 1882 he was editor of the journal Linnæa.
His birthplace in Bräunrode is now a national monument, and is referred to by the name Garckestift.
