The Chinese Immigrants Act of 1881 imposed an initial entry poll tax of 10 pounds, which was raised to 100 pounds in 1896. The intent of the act was to discourage Chinese from settling permanently in New Zealand. From the 1950s to 1980s New Zealand's Chinese community grew to 19,000 people. In the 2001 Census, 3% of the total New Zealand population (100,680 people) identified as Chinese:
