The species grows to about 3 or 4 metres in height
and has leaves

 which are usually 80 to 100 mm long and 5 to 7 mm wide with pointed tips. Red flower spikes are mostly produced between spring and summer.

 in 1822 in Enumeratio Plantarum Horti Regii Berolinensis Altera and given the name Metrosideros linearifolium (later amended to linearifolius). In 1826, DC. transferred the species to the genus Callistemon.

In his 2006 paper New Combinations in Melaleuca for Australian Species of Callistemon (Myrtaceae), Lyndley Craven, a research botanist from the Australian National Herbarium, proposed that this species should be renamed as Melaleuca linearifolia.
