Gerrard Family

The Hall was the seat of the Gerrard family by the marriage of William Gerrard to the daughter and sole heiress of Peter de Brynne in 1250. The house was built with a spacious courtyard in the centre, which was entered by crossing a narrow bridge over the moat that surrounded the house. The hall had a gatehouse, which was secured by huge doors. There was also a porch which led to the great hall, which had a railed gallery that ran along one side of the hall and was used to observe entertainments below without mingling with them. The Gallery was supported by double pillars in front of lavish palasterwork forming arches between them, which also boasted rich carved work. Most of these decorations were taken to decorate Garswood Hall where the family later resided.

Archaeology

It has been proposed that the site of the Old Hall should be excavated to find the remains of the house.
  • As stated in the reference, the site of the original hall was excavated, many years ago, by the landowner and remains of the hall's foundation stones removed. The site is now used for arable purposes.
