After winning three tournaments on the Nationwide Tour in 1992, he joined the PGA Tour in 1993. Henninger's results in the early 2000s were disappointing, and he lost his PGA Tour card after the 2002 season. He has since become a full-time player on the Nationwide Tour, playing in PGA Tour events whenever possible as an alternate or through exemptions.
